« INTRODUCTION »
QuikFile is a simple, easy to use computerized address and
telephone directory program. Features include automatic dialing, a full
featured text editor, search capabilities, and delete options. It will
also print addresses in mailing label format. QuikFile is not a TSR
(memory resident) program.
« REQUIREMENTS »
QuikFile requires an IBM PC/XT/AT/PS2 or compatible computer with
200 k free memory, an Epson/IBM Proprinter/Laser printer (if printing
is desired) and a Hayes or compatible modem (if dialing is desired).
« REGISTRATION »
This program, like so many other fine programs that are released
as "shareware", is the product of months of writing, testing and
retesting. Quite simply, it represents a lot of work. Registration of
this program or any other program is not only a vote of confidence for
the shareware system, but also ensures all of us of programming
excellence in the future.
You may use QuikFile for a period of 10 days, after which time you
MUST register it at a cost of $10 dollars (US). Registration entitles
the user to the latest version of the program without the shareware
closing screen as well as any product support that is required. Send
the enclosed Registration form and a check or money order to:

« OPERATION »
Before you begin, there are a few things to take care of so
QuikFile knows all about your system. The configuration file QFILE.CFG
contains this information. Using a text editor/word processor, load
QFILE.CFG. The following are the default settings, with an explanation
beside each:
QFILE.DAT <-- Name of data file you want to use on startup.
COM1: <-- Communications port to use when dialing. QuikFile
only supports "COM1:" or "COM2:"!
ATDT <-- Modem init. string. Use "ATDP" for pulse dialing.
ATH <-- Modem hang-up string.
LPT1: <-- Printer port if printing is desired.
9 <-- Number of pins on your printer. Either 9 or 24.
Edit each line to conform to your system. Note that ALL lines must be
listed in the order shown! Be sure to save your changes!!
It is STRONGLY suggested that you include the following lines in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT:
SET QFILE_DAT=d:\path\
PATH=.....;d:\path\ <-- Add to end of current PATH statement.
where:
[d:\path\] = Drive letter and path where QFILE.EXE and the data
and supporting files can be found. This also allows the program to run
from ANY drive or subdirectory quickly and easily. Consult your DOS
manual for details on using the SET and PATH statements.
QuikFile requires the following files to run:
QFILE.EXE - The program
QFILE.CFG - Configuration file
To start the program, simply type:
QFILE [searchstring] [/d]
where:
searchstring - Optional text string for QuikFile to search for
on start-up.
/d - Begin dialing the above text string immediately
on start-up.

« OPTIONS »
Use the up/down cursor keys to page through the list of
entries. <HOME> and <END> will take you to the top and the bottom of
the list respectively.
F1-Prt <-- Begin printing the Name and Address fields of the
displayed entry. Printing is done to accommodate standard mailing
labels 1" wide and 3½" long.
F2-Dial <-- Begin dialing the number in the Phone field of the
displayed entry. While dialing, any key press will hang up. After the
last number is dialed, pick up the phone and then press any key to
disconnect the computer modem and connect the phone.
F3-Ed <-- Enter edit mode. This is a full featured text editor.
The following is a summary of the editing functions:
<INS> - Toggle between insert/overwrite modes. A normal
cursor indicates insert mode.
<HOME> - Return cursor to the beginning of the current line.
<END> - Place cursor at the end of the current line of text.
<DEL> - Delete character above/under cursor.
<BKSP> - Delete character to the left of cursor.
<F1> - Erase current text to begin a new entry.
<F2> - Save text to file. You are asked if you would like
to replace (overwrite) the current entry. Press <A>
to abort, <Y> to overwrite the current entry, or <N>
to add this entry to the end of the file.
Maximum: 170 entries per file.
<ESC> - Exit editor.
F4-Sr <-- Search the file for a text string, such as a name. It is
case insensitive search, which means that the program stops at all hits
regardless of uppercase/lowercase text in the string. If a hit is
made, it will be displayed. Press <CR> to continue search, or <ESC> to
stop there.
F5-New <-- Load a new data file. To abort, press <CR> alone.
F6-Del <-- Delete this entry from the file. You will be prompted
before such a deletion is made.

« COMMAND LINE SEARCHING AND AUTO-DIALING »
If a search string is included when the program is executed (i.e.
QFILE Joe Jones), a case insensitive search of the file will be done.
If the string is found, the program will start with this entry.
Adding the [/d] switch (i.e. QFILE Joe Jones /d) will do the same
search, and in addition will begin dialing the number in the Phone
field immediately.
QuikFile v5.1 was programmed and compiled using Microsoft (R)
QuickBASIC 4.5 (c) Microsoft Corporation.
